This year’s iPhone models are expected to see the light of the day at some point in September. Apple is rumored to introduce as many as four iPhone models this year. These are expected to include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Ahead of the launch, the upcoming iPhones have been the subject of numerous leaks and reports. Apart from the usual performance enhancements, the new iPhones are also expected to provide improved battery life.

A report in February pointed out that at least two iPhone 16 series models including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have larger batteries. Now, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is once again rumored to offer longer battery life.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the iPhone 16 Pro Max could provide longer battery life

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the 16 Pro Max’s battery cells will have higher energy density. The source suggests that the increase in the energy density (Wh/kg) will offer “the benefit of longer battery life with the same battery size or lower battery size with the same battery life”. Unfortunately, Kuo didn’t provide details on the exact battery size of the device at the moment.

The bump in the energy density of the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s battery cells will increase the phone’s temperature. To avoid overheating of the battery, the company will utilize a stainless steel battery case as a thermal solution. It will be a first for the iPhones.

“Stainless steel is not as effective as aluminum in dissipating heat, but it is more robust and less susceptible to corrosion, so in addition to dissipating heat, the stainless steel battery case provides better protection for the battery and the iPhone system”, Kuo explained in a post on Medium.

If things go well, the iPhone 17 models next year could have the same battery technology

The market analyst also mentions that if the mass production of the new battery design for the iPhone 16 Pro Max goes well, it will be adopted into the iPhone 17 models next year as well. Sunway will allegedly be the major supplier of the stainless steel battery cases for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Some reports earlier this year indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro variants will use stacked batteries instead of L-shaped cells. However, in his report, Kuo doesn’t mention anything about the design of the power cells.
