Earlier today, YouTube launched a handful of new features at the Made on YouTube event in New York. There were a slew of new features like new AI tools, auto dubbing, VEO for YouTube Shorts, YouTube Inspiration Tab, and more. In addition, YouTube introduced a new Communities feature, which the company describes as “a new YouTube Communities experience for fans, by fans”. The new Communities feature on YouTube is aimed at enhancing the engagement experience for creators and fans.

YouTube Communities lets fans post on creators’ channels

YouTube’s new Communities feature is designed to promote deeper connections between creators and their fans. It is a dedicated space for conversations and connections. It empowers creators to foster an enhanced sense of community around their content. The biggest highlight of Communities is the ability for fans to initiate conversations in the creators’ channels.

YouTube’s Communities functionality is a mix of old-school forums, Facebook groups, and subreddits. Once creators turn on their communities, their fans can post and people can chat with each other. It’s worth noting that YouTube creators will still have control over who can participate in these conversations in Communities.

“Your very own corner of the internet, right on creators’ channels, will be a central hub to discuss videos, share fan art, connect with like-minded individuals, and build a vibrant sense of belonging”, YouTube described in the blog post.

A dedicated space for creators and fans to connect beyond videos

The new Communities feature offers a dedicated space for creators and fans to connect beyond individual videos and comments. There’s a dedicated place where creators can share art, connect, and discuss videos in Communities. YouTube said that fans drive the space in Communities, creating a place where “like-minded individuals can connect, learn, and share their passions”.

The social media giant is currently testing Communities in mobile apps with a small group of creators and their fans. More creators and fans will be added to the new experience later this year. That said, Communities won’t be available widely at least until next year.
