YouTube has quietly introduced new parental control for the teen accounts on the video-sharing platform. The Google subsidiary’s new feature allows parents to keep a better eye on the accounts of their teens. YouTube has started rolling out the new supervision functionality for accounts of teens this week. Notably, Google initially teased this feature when it expanded the “school time” feature to phones and tablets at the beginning of August.
Parents can now easily supervise the YouTube accounts of their teens
Notably, the new feature allows parents to easily connect their own YouTube accounts to the accounts of their teens. The new functionality allows them to supervise the accounts of their teenage children. With the new feature, YouTube will help parents to be more aware of their teen’s activity on the platform.
It also encourages safe practices around sharing content on the video-sharing giant. Notably, the new feature offers insights into their YouTube usage without compromising their privacy.
Parents can link their teen’s account from YouTube’s Family Center
Parents can easily link the accounts of their teens using YouTube’s Family Center in the app. From the Family Center page, they can “Invite a teen” with a QR code set-up process. Once linked, they will be able to see insights like subscriptions, the number of uploads, comments, and more.
YouTube will send email notifications to both linked accounts. The notifications will inform parents when their teen uploads a new video or launch a livestream. YouTube said that it’s meant to “offer advice on responsible creation supported by resources created with Common Sense Networks, an affiliate of Common Sense Media.”
YouTube’s main goal here is to provide both parents and teens with mutual control and new resources. It will “empower teens to become informed and responsible digital citizens”. Notably, the latest feature builds upon the long-offered supervised YouTube experience for pre-teens.
That said, YouTube’s new Family Center feature to connect with teen accounts is available in the app on Android and iOS devices. Notably, apart from YouTube, other popular platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook have also introduced parental controls designed to protect teenagers.
