Right now, YouTube already allows you to activate live captions over a video. However, what if you wanted text showing what someone said at a specific time? According to Android Police, the YouTube app is finally getting the transcriptions functionality.
The video transcriptions tool has been available on YouTube, but it was only for the desktop version. It allows people to see a fully AI-generated transcript of the video complete with a time-code to help you follow along. While that’s nice, people have been wanting it on mobile for a while.
YouTube video transcriptions are coming to the app
However, it seems that their prayers were answered. The company is working on bringing the function of mobile devices. Based on screenshots shared by a user, the mobile version will be similar in function to the desktop version. You’ll get lines of speech, and each of them will have a time code associated with it.
Transcriptions on the YouTube app will lack one bit of functionality, however. On the desktop version, you have the ability to actually search through lines of speech to find the one you want. You can’t do that with the mobile version, unfortunately.
Activating the transcripts will be a piece of cake. Under the video, you’ll see a button front and center that lets you activate it. From that point, the speech will flow in a vertical feed under the video. The feed itself will take up most of the screen just like the comment section. However, there’s no telling if you’ll be able to see the transcript while the phone is in landscape mode.
If you’re excited about this, you’ll have to wait
Right now, this feature is now available to the public. YouTube is testing this out with a select few users. The folks at Android Police attempted to install the latest update from an APK file, and it still didn’t bring on the new feature. The thing is, this feature is being distributed via service-side update.
