Skype was once one of the most popular apps/services for video calls. Well, at least in some regions. It was flying high, but that was no longer the case. Many people forgot the app is still around, and yet Microsoft just released a new design for it. Skype got redesigned after about a year, as it seems Microsoft still believes in it, despite the fact it’s focusing heavily on Teams now.
Skype is getting redesigned, and is also getting some new features
This is not only a visual overhaul, though, as some new features are included too. This is quite a considerable visual overhaul, by the way, as the app does look different now. It’s a change for the better, though, for the most part.
There are quite a few themes you’ll be able to choose from
There are quite a few themes that you can choose from now, and yes, both light and dark modes are supported. The color you choose for the theme will be used throughout the app, and will work in both light and dark modes.
Microsoft also introduced contrast themes for accessibility. This is actually kind of great for people who don’t see all that well, it’s a feature that many more developers should use.
Video calls with up to 100 people are now a possibility
Skype can now be used for video calls with up to 100 people, and you don’t have to pay anything, regardless of how long you’re talking. Microsoft also improved the layout for video calls, you’ll have all the controls easily accessible now.
Real-time translation is also coming
Microsoft is also bringing real-time translation to Skype. It can already translate audio and text for users in the chat, but soon, real-time audio translation will also be included. The real-time audio translation will actually sound like your own voice, it seems.
Microsoft is also adding a “Today tab” on the home screen. This tab will show you news within Skype, and it’ll be easy to share them with your contacts that way. You will be able to personalize your news feed, of course.
It’s coming to everyone soon
Now, we’re not sure when will this update roll out, though. It doesn’t seem to be available yet. Also, Microsoft used iOS images to present the update, but we’re almost certain it’s coming to both platforms. Microsoft didn’t specifically mention iOS or Android, though.
