The official synopsis for Wonderwell is as follows:

At 12 years old, Violet (Milward) is living in Italy with her American parents and her beautiful older sister, Savannah (Free). When Savannah is selected to be the face of world-renowned designer Yana’s (Ora) fashion label, the family travels to an enchanting medieval village for a photo shoot. Neglected and bored, Violet wanders from the ancient Tuscan town into a nearby forest where she meets the enigmatic Hazel (Fisher), who may be the fabled witch of the woods Violet was warned about by Yana’s beleaguered stepson, Daniele (Croft). Guided by Hazel to a mysterious portal, Violet is offered a glimpse of what her future might hold, but like the transition from childhood to womanhood, it may be a journey of no return. A gorgeous coming-of-age adventure that combines cutting-edge CGI technology with riveting live-action, Wonderwell follows Violet on a thrilling, humorous, and often terrifying voyage as she discovers the pitfalls of womanhood through the gateway of her imagination.

The movie comes almost seven full years after it completed filming with Fisher. Marsavin has since explained how the post-production process took so long as the budget wound up inflating because of the visual effects work that needed to be done, causing great delays. The filmmaker also said that the movie includes a dedication to Fisher, whose sudden passing was a “huge shock” for him.

“The journey we have taken as filmmakers with this movie, has been as perilous as that of the movie itself,” Marsavin recently said about the film’s journey, per Deadline. “From filming to screen it has taken us seven years. The visual effects on a movie of this magnitude takes time, but we were challenged with Covid lockdowns and of course the passing of our wonderful Carrie Fisher. Now is the perfect time to share her magical on-screen moments as Hazel.”

On working with Fisher, he added, “Carrie was full of energy during filming and even celebrated her 60th birthday with us in Italy where we shot the movie. After a night shoot, which went on until 2 a.m., she invited the whole team to celebrate with her and the party ended up being shut down by the police because it was deemed a little too loud. Her passing was very emotional for the whole team.”

Wonderwell will be released in limited theaters on June 23, 2023, with a digital release soon to follow. You can find out more about the film at WonderwellMovie.com.
