Vertical Entertainment has released the first trailer for the upcoming horror movie Gone in the Night, previously titled The Cow. Directed by Homecoming co-creator Eli Horowitz in his directorial debut, Gone in the Night stars Winona Ryder and Dermot Mulroney as an unlikely pair investigating a bizarre mystery. Gone in the Night premiered earlier this year at the SXSW film festival to mostly positive reviews and will arrive in theaters on July 15. You can check out the trailer below.

The official plot synopsis for Gone in the Night reads:

“Upon arriving at a remote cabin in the redwoods, Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend Max (John Gallagher Jr.) find a mysterious young couple already there — the rental has apparently been double-booked. With nowhere else to go, they decide to share the cabin with these strangers. When her boyfriend mysteriously disappears with the young woman, Kath becomes obsessed and enlists an unlikely supporter (Dermot Mulroney) with finding an explanation for their sudden breakup — but the truth is far stranger than she could have ever imagined.”

Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Young Guns) plays the owner of the cabin and helps Kath look for her boyfriend. The Gone in the Night trailer reveals that they do find the woman, but it only raises more questions and even casts doubt on Mulroney’s character. “I thought he left me,” Kath screams at one point, indicating she found some closure at least, but likely very devastating, and gruesome, judging by all the blood.

Eli Horowitz directs Gone in the Night from a screenplay co-written with Matthew Derby. The film will debut on July 15 in select theaters before heading to VOD on August 5, 2022.

Gone In The Night Is Described As A Socially Relevant Thriller

Gone in the Night has received mixed to positive reviews from critics so far, with the film’s performances, twists, and social commentary receiving praise. One mystery in itself is the film’s title change from The Cow to Gone in the Night, which most likely was prompted due to too many recent movies with “cow” in their titles. Or it could have been a potential spoiler. Speaking to Deadline in March, Horowitz talked about Gone in the Night and some of the themes it touches upon.

“Dermot and Winona are both these iconic figures that, in some ways we grew up with. In some ways this movie is about this passage of time, and seeing people that we grew up with kind of makes you also think about yourself growing up and aging and the inevitable march towards death that we are all on, and fun stuff like that.”

Horowitz also thanked the SXSW audience and Vertical Entertainment.

“It was a thrill to watch audiences respond so enthusiastically to The Cow at SXSW, and it’s now an even bigger one to be able to share it with the wider world. I’m very grateful to Vertical for partnering with us on this strange and surprising movie.”

While Gone in the Night still has a month left to arrive, in the meantime, be sure to check out Winona Ryder in Stranger Things 4 Volume 2, debuting on Netflix on July 1.
