Neon has unveiled the official trailer for Perfect Days, the latest feature from auteur Wim Wenders. The drama uses vignettes led by Kōji Yakusho, who stars as a public toilet cleaner named Hirayama, to tell a simple and beautiful story about life. The trailer, set to Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” follows Hirayama through what starts as a typical day. He rises while it’s still dark outside, tends to his plants, and, with a smile on his face, steps out to get to work. Once done for the day, Hirayama enjoys a bike ride home through Tokyo. Then something surprising happens. Check it out below.
Perfect Days premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Palme d’Or and earned the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Best Actor Award for Kōji Yakusho. It has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and has been selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Following its Cannes premiere, Perfect Days had screenings at Telluride, TIFF, London, and, most recently, the New York Film Festival. A special engagement at New York’s Angelika Film Center will take place today, November 10, and the film will hit theaters throughout the US early next year.
Check out Perfect Days‘ official synopsis below:
“Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past.”
Perfect Days’ Talented Team
BAFTA recipient Wenders is best known for often exploring different cultures in his character-rich and visually stunning films. His lauded film career dates back to 1970 with the premiere of Summer in the City; his notable credits include Until the End of the World, Wings of Desire, The American Friend, and the Palme d’Or-winning Paris, Texas. Three of his documentaries have earned Academy Award nominations for Best Documentary Feature: Buena Vista Social Club, Pina, and The Salt of the Earth. His most recent documentary, the 3D film Anselm, which also premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, chronicles the art of German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer.
Perfect Days is directed by Wenders, from a script written by Wenders and Takuma Takasaki. The two also co-produce the film alongside Koji Yanai. Along with Yakusho, Perfect Days also stars Arisa Nakano, Tokio Emoto, Aoi Yamada, Yumi Okumura, and Sayuri Ishikawa. Yakusho is an internationally known actor who is considered one of the greatest living Japanese performers. His credits include roles in Shall We Dance?, 13 Assassins, The Eel, Memoirs of a Geisha, Under the Open Sky, Babel, and his many films with the great Kiyoshi Kurosawa, such as Cure, Pulse, Charisma, and Retribution.
A co-production between Japan and Germany, the film will debut in theaters in Germany on December 21 and throughout Japan the following day. Perfect Days will land in US theaters in early 2024. You can see the full poster below.
