The exclusive first trailer for the upcoming coming-of-age comedy drama What’s My Name Again? teases a poignant quest for identity as a teenager must choose one of his three fathers’ last names before he becomes an adult. Coming courtesy of Gravitas Ventures, What’s My Name Again? is all set to be released on VOD beginning July 18th. You can check out the trailer for What’s My Name Again? below.
“It’s 1985 and with two days to adulthood and the final race of his illustrious HS swimming career, Bo’s fiery mom breaks the news that his stepdad’s adoption paperwork was never filed. He must choose one of his three disengaged fathers’ surnames before he comes of age and files his swimming scholarship,” the official synopsis for What’s My Name Again? begins.
“Bo’s sordid upbringing, and the impact each father had on his makeshift identity, come to a head at his eighteenth birthday bash,” the outline continues. “The surname debate triggers some good ole toxic masculinity, ending in his fathers’ literally fighting for him for the first time in his life. Bo escapes South of the border on a voyage of discovery and debauchery with his budding lover, Alea, and best pal, Griff. The night leads Alea to confront the pressures in dating outside her family’s ethnicity, Griff to accept his budding sexuality and Bo to realize he must clean the slate to start a legacy of his own.”
Written and directed by Spencer Zender (This Side Up) in his directorial debut, What’s My Name Again? is led by newcomer Ryan Winn as Bo. The rest of the cast behind What’s My Name Again? includes Allison Byrnes (Criminal Minds), Nick Schultz, Talia Mychael Blaney, Theodore Newton (This Side Up), and Daniel Abraham Stevens (Requiem for the Damned).
What’s My Name Again? is scheduled for release on VOD later this month on July 18, 2023.
Coming of Age Movies in 2023
Alongside the search for identity in What’s My Name Again?, this summer season has had a vast array of different movies to offer those interested in coming-of-age tales. Alongside the likes of the live action remake of The Little Mermaid, the animated outing Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings led by Jennifer Lawrence, and the action comedy-drama Polite Society, this year saw the release of the adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1970 novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
Released back in April, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. follows 11-year-old Margaret as she moves to a new town and begins to contemplate everything about life, friendship and adolescence. She relies on her mother, Barbara, who offers loving support, and her grandmother, Sylvia, who’s coming to terms with finding happiness in the next phase of her life. Questions of identity, one’s place in the world, and what brings meaning to life soon brings them closer together than ever before.
Starring Abby Ryder Fortson, Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. was met with acclaim upon release, with critics commending the movie for doing justice to the seminal novel.
What’s My Name Again? will hopefully be another period dramedy that taps into the turbulence, confusion, and joy of coming to maturity.
