Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is almost unrecognizable with his new role as a buff “Weird Al” Yankovic in the new biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Putting a spin on the traditional musician biopic, Weird takes some creative liberties with Yankovic’s life story by reimagining him as someone who lived more of a party rocker lifestyle. It’s just as bizarre as it sounds, yet it’s something fans won’t be able to stop watching if the trailer is any indication. You can watch the new trailer below, per Roku on YouTube.
Eric Appel directs Weird: The Al Yankovic Story using a screenplay co-written with “Weird Al” Yankovic. It is based on a Funny or Die sketch that was released in 2010 featuring Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul as an alternate version of “Weird Al,” similar to this new biopic with Daniel Radcliffe. Appel had worked on the original parody trailer as well, which included appearances from Yankovic, Olivia Wilde, Gary Cole, Mary Steenburgen, and Patton Oswalt.
An all-star cast has also been assembled for the feature film adaptation. Along with Radcliffe as the titular parodist, the film stars Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, Toby Huss as Nick Yankovic, and Julianne Nicholson as Mary Yankovic. “Weird Al” has also joked that this will become Radcliffe’s best-known role.
“When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule. And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for,” Yankovic said in a statement when first announcing the film.
Daniel Radcliffe Becomes the Most Legendary Parodist of All Time
The casting of Daniel Radcliffe as Al Yankovic seems to come out of left field, but there is a story about how it came to be. Radcliffe previously explained how he was once on The Graham Norton Show in 2010 when he perfectly recited every word from the classic novelty song “The Elements” by Tom Lehrer. Your average person certainly wouldn’t be able to do this quite as well, and when Yankovic saw the footage, he was convinced that Radcliffe had what it took to play a famous parodist.
You can read the official synopsis for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story below.
“The biopic holds nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle. WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story takes audiences on a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.”
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is coming to The Roku Channel this fall. An exact release date hasn’t yet been set.
