What’s going on with Pizza Hut?

A concerning video showing a Pizza Hut washroom being used to store supplies for food orders has gone viral online with viewers labelling it “gross.”

Hygiene violations are sadly more common than they should be in the modern world. But even a person who knows next to nothing about basic hygiene would probably be able to tell you that food and toilets don’t mix. In fact, any food-related items should probably be kept as far away as possible from areas where people defecate and urinate. Well apparently a Pizza Hut joint in Toronto, Canada didn’t get the memo.

A customer noticed the boxes, which are apparently filled with supplies for food orders, while she was using the bathroom. Not only that, but a unit of shelves holding the bags and cups for takeaway orders can clearly be seen. The woman wisely decided to record what she saw, filming everything, the boxes, the supplies, and the toilet, all within about 5 five of each other. She can be heard asking, “why are there food supplies in the washroom?”

The video was shared to X by Ontario lawyer, Caryma Sa’d, and has 150k views on the site. Across the internet it has amassed even more views, reaching into the millions.

A washroom is not a storage room

While no actual food items can be seen in the video there are still plenty of items that will be touching people’s food meaning germs from the toilet will no doubt be transferred to the food that customers are eating. This is incredibly unhygienic and people were rightly concerned.

On X, many wanted answers as to who was responsible for running this particular store. One person asked “Who owns that pizza hut? We need answers.” Another echoed the first’s sentiment, writing, “Who is the franchise owner?”

Others simply wrote that it was “disgusting” and “gross.” A few made light of it all with one person joking “One medium, hold the feces!!!!” While another quipped “so still way better than dominos ;)”

Pizza Hut responds

After people kicked up enough of a stink it caught the attention of Pizza Hut Canada on X. The company’s official account responded to the post writing, “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We take this seriously, as it doesn’t reflect our standards. We’re working quickly to resolve the issue.”

However, it may be too little too late as many restaurant-goers have already been put off by what they’ve seen and it’s difficult to blame them. According to nowtoronto.com the Health Department revealed that it had already received a complaint about the situation last week. In a statement they claimed that they “will investigate this issue immediately.”
