Sundown, starring Tim Roth, is set to hit select theaters starting January 28th, 2021, after a successful premiere at the Venice Film Festival last September. The film is written and directed by Michel Franco, known for films such as New Order, Chronic, and April’s Daughter and Después de Lucía and Los Herederos. The new movie just dropped a trailer that will give us a first look ahead of its release, thanks to Bleecker Street. You can view the trailer below:

Alongside Roth, the cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Iazua Larios, Henry Goodman, Albertine Kotting McMillan, and Samuel Bottomley. Roth and Gainsbourg play Neil and Alice Bennett, who are the center of a wealthy family on vacation in Mexico. The trip seems like a typical family vacation of drinks, food, fun, and occasional family issues. That is until an emergency cuts their trip short and reveals the deep problems and tensions within the family.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The film brings a little of everything to the table, laughs, thrills, drama and more. Plus, many scenes of Tim Roth pounding beers on a beach in Mexico. It is not all fun and games on the beach as we know with any Franco film, the bloodshed can’t be too far behind. With the trailer only showing us a little bit of the story, we see that it will have many layers to it. Being a Franco film, you can expect some very intense scenes, some involving corrput police officers and a randoom shooting or two. The film, at times, does ask the age-old question of “Who wouldn’t want to blow off their day-to-day duties and sit on a beach in Mexico?” I mean, coming from a wealthy family, it seems like something that could be done. All of the family members have their issues and clearly, some are wound up pretty tight, more so than others. The fantastic background of Mexico with the beach, drinks and locals only hide the dark tones that lay waiting as the story unfolds piece by piece. The film after all cannot give everything away in the trailer, but it does give us a sense of what might be coming as the story unfolds.

The film looks at what a wealthy and a very tight-knit family thinks they can do. However, when you have one person disrupt the flow and balance of that tight-knit family, tensions erupt and things start to crack. The family unit unwinds and you begin to learn more and more about the deep issues that are sitting just beneath the service. The film will no doubt have its moments that make people think and make people feel uncomfortable. Franco and Roth have a history of working together as this is their second film. Roth knows what Franco is looking for and his storytelling style. What do you think of the trailer? Will this be a movie that you add to your list?
