Disney has released the retro-style teaser trailer for Strange World, a new animated movie that travels through space and time on an epic journey. The official synopsis for the film reads:
The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission.
Check out the trailer for the upcoming movie below.
The trailer shows mysterious creatures, over-the-top action, and bizarre scenery in an extraordinary and unknown world. Aside from the synopsis, not much is known about the film except for what we see in the trailer. Last year, director Don Hall shared the inspiration behind Disney Animations’ latest film with Variety.
“I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up. They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for ‘Strange World'”.
Based on the description Hall gave us, it’s safe to assume that Strange World will be similar to Journey to the Center of the Earth, a 1959 film remade in 2008. The movie centers on an epic quest with a small team to a land far from reality, and it’s likely we will see many of the same themes in Strange World, such as perseverance towards a larger goal, doubt versus faith, and the power of nature. Hall has a proven track record when it comes to animated movies. He’s helmed projects like Big Hero 6, Moana, and Raya and the Last Dragon; however, this will be his first solo outing as a director, putting a little more pressure on the filmmaker to deliver results.
The vast majority of Disney animated projects are co-directed by two or more people, and the last movie to be directed by one person was Wreck-It Ralph in 2012. Hall will be joined once again by Qui Nguyen, who is writing the film. The two last worked together on Raya and the Last Dragon in 2021 and immediately began work on Strange World after that.
Jake Gyllenhaal Will Star in the New Disney Film
Jake Gyllenhaal plays the role of Searcher Clade in Strange World, although details surrounding his character are still slim at this time. In the trailer, Searcher Clade explains that he’s not an explorer, but a farmer, as he pokes around at the diverse wildlife found within the new world. He seems reluctant to be on this journey; however, we will see how his attitude shifts throughout the film and explore the relational dynamics in the Clade family. Strange World is releasing on Nov. 23rd, a period that Disney dominates.
Movies like Frozen, Moana, and Coco have all been released around Thanksgiving and turned out to be massive commercial successes. Disney will want to replicate this success with Strange World, although it’s still unknown whether the film will be released straight to streaming on Disney+ or will be granted a theatrical release.
