The Olympics are set to begin later this month in Paris, and for those of us in the US, you’ll be able to watch quite a few events in 4K thanks to NBCUniversal. So picking up a new TV is a good idea, especially one that is this good, and this cheap.
This is the QM8 model from TCL that was announced last year (it’s predecessor has been announced, but is not available yet), and it’s a QLED Mini LED TV. Meaning that you’re getting the incredible colors from QLED, with the incredible brightness of Mini LED into one package. This is the 85-inch model which is now available for $1,399. That’s a pretty incredible deal for a 85-inch TV and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that cheap, before.
With QLED, you’re getting over a billion colors that give you richer and more lifelike images. It has a lot of the advantages of OLED, without the screen burn-in, which is very important. This also means that you won’t be getting the same gray color for “black” as you do on a lot of LED TVs. With Mini LED, this is mostly pertaining to the backlighting. Most LED TVs have a single backlight for the entire panel, which is part of the reason why blacks turn up as gray. But with Mini LED, there are 2,300 local dimming zones on the QM8 with precise zone control. Making it brighter without destroying the picture quality.
This particular model is a Google TV version. TCL typically alternates between Google TV and Roku for its TVs each year. So with Google TV, you’re getting all of your favorite Android apps available here – including Peacock, which you’ll need to watch the Olympics. It also has Google Cast and Google Assistant support, giving you the ability to stream anything from your phone onto your TV. TCL has also included Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, making this the perfect home theater TV.
