Samsung‘s Ultra flagship lineup is undergoing a major design change next year. As confirmed by leaked renders last week, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a flat display instead of a curved one. This redesign also makes the new model wider and shorter. Samsung made the Galaxy S24 Ultra wider to keep the same display size
According to a recent leak, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will measure 162.3 x 79 x 8.6mm in dimension. In comparison, the current Ultra measures 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9mm. As you can see, the upcoming model is slightly wider, shorter, and thinner. We are talking about fractions of millimeters, but it does make a difference. If you paid attention to the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s edges, you must have noticed that the screen is no longer curved. It’s a flat panel. The top glass may be slightly curved, but the display itself is said to be completely flat. This change is effectively what triggered the changes in dimension. Samsung wanted to equip the new model with a 6.8-inch display as before, so it made the phone wider. The Korean firm also seems to have shrunk the bezels a little.
The rest of the design is largely the same. Thanks to a slightly shorter and wider build, the power and volume buttons have come down a little for earlier one-handed reach. Everything else, including the rear camera array, is unchanged. We might see some changes in the sensors underneath those camera rings, but that’s a different matter. Rumors are that Samsung will replace the 10x optical zoom camera with a 5x lens.
The Plus model has bigger camera rings
As usual, Samsung’s 2024 flagship lineup will include three models. The Galaxy S24 Ultra will arrive alongside the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. We also saw the latter two in leaked renders from the same source last week. A closer inspection of the Plus model reveals that it has slightly bigger camera rings compared to its predecessor. It’s unclear whether that means major changes to the sensors behind those rings. We should get a clearer picture in the coming weeks as leaks start to get more detailed closer to the launch.
