Netflix is slowly revealing its lineup for August 2024. The recently released Downtown Owl is just confirmed to be arriving in the month, and it is now scheduled to make its SVOD debut on Netflix in the US on August 7th, 2024.
Premiering last year at the Tribeca Film Festival before receiving a VOD release in late April 2024, the Netflix debut will mark the first time the film has been streaming as part of a subscription package in the US.
Directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater (the latter of whom wrote the movie), it is set in the early 1980s and follows three residents of a small fictional town in North Dakota who have interchanging paths.
Lily Rabe stars as Julia Rabia, and the rest of the cast includes Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, August Blanco Rosenstein, Jack Dylan Grazer, Finn Wittrock, and Henry Golding.
Reviews for the title are few and far between, but those that did get around to watching and posting a review were mixed with it holding a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of publishing. ScreenRant, giving the movie a 2 out of 5, called it a “missed opportunity.” At the same time, on the other end of the spectrum, Kate Erbland for indieWire was more forgiving, saying, “Klosterman’s vision of this tiny, insulated world was never this neat and tidy, a lesson that has not translated to its cinematic companion. It’s a slice of life, surely.”
The movie is just the latest from the bountiful Sony Pictures deal Netflix struck back in 2021. A slew of titles from the distributor and its subsidiaries have hit or hit Netflix in the US over the Summer.
Just this week, we got word that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire would be landing on Netflix on July 22nd, 2024, and we’re also seeing two Sony Pictures Classics titles hitting Netflix for the first time in the form of The Peasants and The Teachers Lounge.
