Sony Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming horror film Umma. Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and Fivel Stewart (Atypical, Freeze) star in Umma as a mother-daughter duo whose blissful lives are threatened by a sinister family secret. Written and directed by Iris K. Shim in her feature film debut and produced by horror icon Sam Raimi, Umma will premiere on March 18, 2022. You can check out the trailer below.

The plot synopsis reads: “Umma, which is the Korean word for “mother,” follows Amanda (Sandra Oh) and her daughter (Fivel Stewart) living a quiet life on an American farm, but when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The trailer introduces Amanda as an over-protective woman living with her daughter on a farm. Their seemingly quaint lives are turned upside down after the sudden arrival of the remains of Amanda’s mother. “Her anger will grow as long as she remains in this box,” says the mysterious courier. Clearly, Amanda and her mom weren’t on good terms, as she has kept her mother’s existence a secret from her daughter and even refuses to accept the remains initially. “Some Koreans believe that life’s hardships are caused by the tormented spirits of their ancestors,” says Amanda at one point.

Umma was written over a two-year period by Iris Shim, who took inspiration from her childhood and Korean traditions. As evident from the trailer, Umma features imagery inspired by Korean folktales; for instance, the nine-tailed fox (called kumiho) briefly appears towards the end of the trailer. Umma also seems to deviate from generic horror films and aims to deliver something deeper and more personal, or as it’s called nowadays – elevated horror. Hopefully, Umma will turn out to be a phenomenal film.

Alongside Sandra Oh and Fivel Stewart, Umma also stars Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Hanna), Odeya Rush (Goosebumps, Ladybird), Tom Yi (The Purge), and MeeWha Alana Lee (Five Stars). Sony also released a chilling poster, accompanying the trailer with the tagline, “A mother’s love never dies.” But we’re not sure whose love it’s talking about: Amanda’s dead mother, obsessed with her daughter, or Amanda herself, who’ll go to any lengths to protect her daughter from her family’s harrowing past.
