Twitter has offered Twitter Spaces for a while, and they seem to be doing well. However, it seems that the company wants to offer another audio-centric service. According to a tweet from @wongmjane, Twitter could also be bringing in a dedicated tab for podcasts.

Twitter could be working on a dedicated tab for podcasts

It seems that just about every platform is pivoting towards podcasts. Spotify made the biggest push for podcasts by adding studios and scooping up companies. Now, it has a thriving podcast platform. Other companies, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and even YouTube, have put some time and effort to be the next go-to spot for podcasts.

Twitter might be the next platform on that list thanks to a new leaked screenshot. The leak comes from developer Jane Manchun Wong, and it shows what looks like an upcoming podcasts tab on Twitter. The screenshot shows the mobile version of Twitter with the selection of tabs at the bottom. The third tab on the bottom shows a microphone icon, and that represents the podcasts tab.

First off, the screen is completely devoid of any podcasts. This could mean that the company is still working on developing the actual feature. It still needs to populate that tab with podcasts.

Something is missing from that tab

If it looks like something is missing, that’s because something IS missing. In the screenshot, we see that everything’s there except for the Twitter Spaces tab. That does stand out, as Twitter spaces have picked up some steam over the months since its release. The fact that we don’t see the Spaces tab could point to a few things.

Firstly, it could mean that Spaces’ days are numbered. It’s possible that Twitter could be axing the feature altogether. There’s no way to tell if its Spaces feature is pulling in the numbers that Twitter wants it to.

Another possibility is that Twitter is renaming Spaces to Podcasts. That would make sense, as a Space is basically an improvised podcast. You’re the audience to a conversation between numerous people, so it’s not much different from a true-to-form podcast.

It’s also possible that Spaces will become a subsection under the Podcast tab. Twitter could be adding actual podcasts to the platform, but it could have Spaces as a section under the Podcasts tab. Instead of seeing the Spaces on the top of the feed, they will be in the Podcasts tab. Right now, this is just a screenshot, so it’s hard to tell if this will even be a thing. Only time will tell.
