Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will drop audiences into the ’90s amid a war between the Autobots, the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons.
The latest trailer for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts brings the Beast Wars saga to the big screen, revealing the Autobots, the Maximals, the Predacons, and the Terrorcons in all their glory. Shown during the Super Bowl, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts promises to be the most epic adventure in the franchise when it lands in theaters later this year. Described as a spiritual successor to 2018’s Bumblebee, thus making Transformers: Rise of the Beasts both a prequel and a sequel, the movie will shift the adventure from the 1980s to the 1990s. Dropping us in 1994, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will follow a pair of archaeologists from Brooklyn who find themselves at the center of an ancient conflict that takes them on a globe-trotting adventure that ties in with three factions of Transformers: the Maximals, the Predacons and the Terrorcons.
Director Steven Caple Jr., best known for helming the 2018 boxing sequel Creed 2, will aim to cement Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in the ‘90s by taking some inspiration from some of cinema’s best outings from that particular decade. Namely, the 1991 action classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day. “I think you’ll feel the sense of a journey and expedition in this film. This go-around that connects all of those to what you’re saying. Terminator 2 is classic,” the filmmaker revealed regarding his approach to bringing Transformers: Rise of the Beasts to the big screen. “The heaviness of the metal, if you will, all that stuff plays into it. So I think when you’re looking at our film and looking at sort of where we’re taking it, [we] kind of want to bring that classic expedition, that classic journey through New York and where we go from there.”
Hellboy Star Ron Perlman Joins the Transformers Franchise as Optimus Primal
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will introduce several versions of the beloved robots in disguise, including the Maximals, the descendants of the Autobots. Optimus Primal leads this particular group, a descendant of Optimus Prime, who Hellboy star Ron Perlman will voice. Much like his near-namesake, Optimus Primal is a fearless leader and the head of the Maximals. Able to transform into a powerful gorilla, Optimus Primal is a favorite of the Beast Wars saga, with audiences excited to see the character share the silver screen with Prime.
Alongside Perlman, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set to be led by In the Heights star Anthony Ramos as Noah, an ex-military electronics expert, and Judas and the Black Messiah star Dominique Fishback by his side as Elena, an ambitious, talented artifact researcher, both of whom find themselves dragged into the intergalactic battle between these warring factions of giant robots.
The rest of the cast includes Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s Lauren Vélez, and the rapper Tobe Nwigwe, as well as Transformers legend Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, alongside Pete Davidson as Mirage, Liza Koshy as Arcee; Cristo Fernández as Wheeljack, John DiMaggio as both Stratosphere and Transit, Michelle Yeoh as Airazor, David Sobolov as Rhinox and Battletrap, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez as Nightbird, and Peter Dinklage as Scourge, the leader of the Terrorcons.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 9 by Paramount Pictures. Two more sequels in the Transformers franchise are already now in development.
