The trailer for Ordinary Angels has finally arrived. Hailing from Lionsgate, the drama film was directed by Jon Gunn and written by Meg Tilly and Kelly Fremon Craig. Since the last time we at MovieWeb talked about the film was around a month ago, here’s a little refresher to go along with the new footage. The plot summary for the film is as follows:
“Based on a remarkable true story, ORDINARY ANGELS centers on Sharon Steves (Hilary Swank), a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky who discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets Ed Schmitt (Alan Ritchson), a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels.”
Gunn is best known for his work in the world of indie films. Some of the past movies he’s directed have been The Week starring Mike Vogel, American Underdog starring Zachery Levi, and Jesus Revolution starring Joel Courtney. He is in no way related to director turned head of the DC universe James Gunn and, by extension, actor Sean Gunn.
Tilly, meanwhile, has written multiple books in the past, though this will be her first screenplay credit. Previously, according to IMDb, Tilly also served as the writer of the Winnetka Road episode “Women in Love,” a series in which she also starred in. Another acting credit for Tilly includes Agnes of God, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Fremon Craig is best known for writing and directing the comedy-drama The Edge of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld, which was also her directorial debut. Fremon Craig also wrote and directed the recently released Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, the long-awaited adaptation of the Judy Blume novel starring Abby Ryder Fortson as the title character.
More About Ordinary Angels’ Lead Actors
Swank rose to recognition in Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry, though she had numerous credits before that, such as in The Next Karate Kid or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie, not the tv show). Swank is also known for her performance in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, which, like Boys Don’t Cry, earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. In a statement to TODAY.com, Swank said this:
“I was drawn to this beautiful true story because it’s such a powerful reminder that angels reside everywhere among us. And that faith, hope, grit, and positivity are all powerful fuel for miracles.”
Ritchson’s first TV appearance was on American Idol, while his acting debut was as Arthur Curry, aka AC, aka Aquaman, on Smallville. Years later, he would play a different DC superhero, Hank Hall, aka Hawk, on Titans. You might also recognize him from Reacher, whose second season is set to premiere sometime this year. Ritchson had the following to say to TODAY.
“I’m an optimist. I believe in the best in people. I believe that sometimes we just need to be reminded of the power of what we can do together. This is why I was drawn to Ordinary Angels.“
Ordinary Angels is set to release on October 13, 2023.
