Kiernan Shipka travels back to the 80s to catch a killer in the first look images from Totally Killer, Blumhouse’s upcoming dark comedy, coming to Prime Video on October 6. After playing the famous teenage witch in Netflix hit series, Shipka is up for some new chilling adventures in Totally Killer, which she’ll be starring along with Julie Bowen, Olivia Hoult, Randall Park, Lochlyn Munro, Charlie Gillespie, Liana Liberato, and many more. You can watch the brand-new trailer below:
Here’s the official synopsis and first look images for the film, which is directed by Nahnatchka Khan:
“35 years after the shocking murder of three teens, the infamous ‘Sweet 16 Killer’ returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. 17-year-old Jamie ignores her overprotective mom’s warning and comes face-to-face with the masked maniac and, on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar and outrageous culture of the 1980s, Jamie teams up with her teen mom to take down the killer once and for all, before she’s stuck in the past forever.”
Blumhouse is famous for developing comedy slashers like Freaky and Happy Death Day, which were also female-led productions, something that has characterized many films from the company in the last couple of years.
Kiernan Shipka Is Happy to Return to the Horror Genre
This isn’t the first time Shipka is involved in a project that mixes comedy and horror, and she’s glad she can be part of a new story that successfully unifies both genres just like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina did. While speaking with Cosmopolitan, before the beginning of the actors strike, the actress expressed her excitement for Totally Killer and what she likes about her character:
“I love the horror genre. I like that it can be extraordinarily gripping and terrifying, and psychologically mess you up for a couple of days. Or it can also just be this joyous movie experience. Jamie is a very modern teen girl – she’s flawed, spends too much time on her phone and is not yet thinking about the bigger picture of her life. All of the sudden, she’s forced to grow up very quickly to take control of her situation and through this awakening, discovers how brave she is.”
In the same interview, director Nahnatchka Khan talked about mixing genres, something Blumhouse does so well:
“I’ve always been a fan of genre mash-ups and love the crossover of slasher/horror and comedy – the idea of creating tension and a real threat and then using comedy as a release valve was really appealing to me,” Khan said. “And on top of that, adding in the time travel and the 80s and the meta-ness of someone from 2023 traveling back in time having seen movies about other people traveling back in time… there were so many fun elements and dynamics I was excited to play with.”
Totally Killer can be streamed on Prime Video on October 6.
