One of the most popular social media platforms today, TikTok, is finally optimized to work with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. A Reddit user spotted the changes on their Galaxy Z Fold 3, thus confirming that developers are still working on making their apps compatible with larger and unconventional screen types.
The optimized version of TikTok also works on the Galaxy Z Fold 2
Previously, TikTok videos on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 wouldn’t extend beyond the cover display. But this finally changes thanks to the new update discovered by Reddit user u/ruekota (via XDA). Other Reddit users point out that these optimizations also apply to the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
Moreover, users can now watch TikTok videos and switch from the cover screen to the primary display without refreshing the video. Additionally, the TikTok home screen grid for creators now shows four video entries instead of just three. Lastly, the share sheet on the main display is smaller, making it easier to access.
But as some users note, the new update also retains some of the screen issues on TikTok. “Tested with a video of a weird (sic) aspect ratio, and it still spilled off the edges of the screen,” u/Awseome2logan said. The user went on to say that subtitles are still broken. Some claim that the aspect ratio remains unchanged from previous iterations. So TikTok probably has some more work to do.
Google said it would optimize over 20 of its apps for larger screens
While new and unique display formats are quite exciting, they pose several new challenges to the app developers. Google has tried to change this by committing to improve the optimization of its apps with larger devices such as tablets and foldables.
The company said during I/O last month that it would optimize over 20 Google apps for the larger form factor. The search & ads giant also said at the time that third-party apps like TikTok, Facebook, etc, are working on optimizing their apps for bigger devices.
But it’s unclear why it has taken developers this long to include support. The Galaxy Z Fold series has been around for a couple of years now. Not to mention foldables from other manufacturers.
