As we’re waiting to see what will happen with TikTok in the US, the app/service got banned in one European country. The country in question is Albania, and this ban comes following the killing of a teenager.
TikTok has been banned in one European country following a tragic incident
Albania has announced a one-year ban on TikTok following the event. The ban will take place starting early next year. The decision comes following a fatal incident that includes a 14-year-old boy which took place in November.
The country’s Prime Minister, Edi Rama, blamed TikTok and similar platforms for the incident. He said that such platforms contribute to a culture of violence among youth. Here are his exact words regarding the ban: “For one year, we’ll be completely shutting it down for everyone. There will be no TikTok in Albania”
He said that he did not come up with this decision lightly. This comes following discussions with educators and parents. He criticized social media in general, implying that they’re harming children.
A number of other European countries issued stricter controls on social media
This ban follows stricter controls of social media by other European countries. Those countries are Frame, Germany, and Belgium, which have introduced restrictions not long ago. Australia, on the other hand, has issued a general ban for children under 16 years of age.
TikTok did have something to say regarding Albania’s ban. The company said that Albania found no evidence which links the platform to the incident. Therefore, TikTok seems this ban as unjustified.
TikTok has been a hot topic for a while now. The company is grasping at straws to remain active in the US. The ban is looming, and the two last resorts are the Supreme Court and President-elect, Donald Trump.
Donald Trump did recently say that it may not be a bad idea to keep the app around for the time being. His exact words were “for at least a little while”. TikTok also has to go in front of the Supreme Court to try and prevent the ban in the US.
