Is history repeating itself?

Speculations have started growing concerning President Trump’s mental acuity.

When Joe Biden made the mistake of trying to campaign for a second term in the Oval Office, Trump was one of the first people who took swipes at his clearly unstable state. And while segments of the media tried to shield Biden, eventually George Clooney wrote a New York Times op-ed that was impossible to ignore, and pressure rose until Biden did the right thing and stepped down. Ever since then, Trump — perhaps understanding what’s at stake — has taken every half-opportunity to reiterate just how mentally sharp he is.

But an X user posted a clip that made everyone ask: just how mentally sharp is he actually? Trump is well known for saying what he needs to say to get something he desires, so his claims are best ignored until they can be verified — even when ignoring his suggested policy moves that bear no expert backing, like reopening up Alcatraz. There has been a concerning trend of him babbling nonsense that had the X user making the plea that “this needs to be a bigger story.”

Trump’s speculated cognitive decline was greatly pronounced when he claimed that Biden’s recent cancer was “stage 9.” From that point on, even more people started loudly wondering if the 78-year-old is going through a late-onset cognitive decline.

To make matters worse, NBC News reported that the Trump administration has officially started removing Trump transcripts online. And experts are reporting that that could be an attempt by the White House to obfuscate and shield the President from his multiple verbal missteps where he meanders around topics and clearly suffers from mental lapses or even makes things up entirely, like suggesting Hitler made a speech at the Eiffel Tower.

The Presidential Records Act of 1978 mandates that the administration preserve all presidential records, including transcripts. These are long-held laws and traditions that ensure history will always be recorded accurately. This latest decision is just another case of their misunderstanding of their legal requirements — or even worse, just straight fluttering of precedents with full impunity.

There was a mistake that was made last year by the media in how the reporting of Biden’s cognitive health was handled. First, there were claims that behind the scenes he was actually very sharp. Then the people raising concerns were told they wanted the President to fail. And then finally, now that everyone accepts it, the people on the front line who were denying the obvious facts, like Jake Tapper, are releasing books about how they knew all along. There’s a chance here that history might be repeating itself.

Trump’s speech pattern and jumping to wild conclusions has certainly been a huge part of his public persona. But this seems a bit different. He seems a little off his mark. People get old, and sometimes our brains can’t handle high-pressure situations like holding one of the highest offices in the world.

These are trying times. There are wars being fought, there are trade agreements being rewrote, and new bills being drafted. The President of the United States should at least know which is the highest stage of cancer.
