You may have heard the recent rumors about the Galaxy S24 Ultra getting a flat display instead of a curved one. The change makes the new Samsung flagship look less sleek and premium than its predecessor. But why is the Korean behemoth doing this, we finally have an answer. Not an official answer from Samsung, but a noted industry insider has an explanation.
According to X/Tiwtter tipster @Tech_Reve, this is a direct implication of Samsung upgrading its flagships to M13 OLED displays next year. The new panels bring power efficiency and picture quality improvements over the M12 panels that the company has been using since mid-2022, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. However, the improvements come at a cost.
More precisely, manufacturing curved M13 OLED panels would cost Samsung more than flat panels with the same technology. Since the company requires a large volume of the new type of display, it’s more cost-effective to make them all flat rather than mixing curved and flat panels. This would reduce defects and increase yield rates, lowering the overall manufacturing cost of the displays.
In other words, a flat display for the Galaxy S24 Ultra is nothing but a cost-cutting measure from Samsung. It’s ditching curved screens for its benefits. Of course, the company will have something fancy to say about this change when it officially launches the Galaxy S24 series early next year. But based on the latest word from the rumor mill, the Korean biggie could have kept a curved display on the new Ultra.
The Galaxy S24 display is getting a massive brightness boost
Samsung switching to a flat display for the Galaxy S24 Ultra may put off some of its fans, but the situation isn’t all doom and gloom. There are some bright spots here, literally. The entire Galaxy S24 series is getting a massive brightness boost. The next-gen Samsung flagships are said to boast a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. For reference, the Galaxy S23 display has a maximum brightness level of 750 nits.
Early rumors have also hinted at flat edges next year. The edges, i.e. the frame, meanwhile, will be reportedly made of titanium. Samsung used aluminum until very recently. The all-new Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldables have an aluminum frame. The Galaxy S24 series may bring camera upgrades as well. We are also expecting bigger batteries. More details should surface in the coming months.
