Google is preparing a new Weather app that will debut on the Pixel 9 series next week, according to Android Authority. This news is a bit puzzling seeing as Google just redesigned the entire app last year, when the Pixel Fold launched. So now, seeing it get an entire rework a year later is kind of surprising.
The new app will continue to be a part of the existing Pixel Weather app, and will be available on the Pixel 9 first. It will eventually make it to older Pixel phones, as one would expect. Android Authority was able to get their hands on the final version of the app, to see what’s new here.
Google’s Weather app goes minimal
Google is taking a minimalist approach with this weather app, especially when compared to the current version on Pixel devices. As we can see in the screenshot below, the temperature is shown front-and-center and is also larger now. Previously, the temperature was pretty small, the same as the high and low temperatures and the real feel.
With this redesign, Google is making it easier to read and get the info you want, right away. It almost looks more Material Design than the current version. And does match a good number of Google’s own widgets shapes and sizes. It will still show you all of the same data, in a more visually appealing style.
Google has also redesigned the location selection screen, which looks pretty similar, but it does offer more emphasis on the current weather conditions, as well as the temperature.
We’ll get to see more about this new weather app on the Pixel 9 next week during the Made by Google event. Though, I would not expect to see Google spend a lot of time on this new app in the keynote.
