Lead actor John Boyega has heaped praise on the vision of They Cloned Tyrone director Juel Taylor, who will make his feature film directorial debut with the Netflix comedy, and his “new perspective” when it comes to storytelling. “I loved the concept,” Boyega said. “I already had heard about Juel Taylor’s mind from behind the scenes. There were rumors of this young director who had a new perspective on entertainment and a new perspective on storytelling.”

According to Boyega, They Cloned Tyrone is “a new creative direction. There’s been a lot of talk right now about big studio projects and wanting more nuanced stories, going back to those dramas and comedies that we miss, especially during the heyday of Black cinema. I think this is a cool representation of that, with really funny moments.”

Directed by Juel Taylor from a screenplay by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, They Cloned Tyrone is scheduled to premiere at the 27th American Black Film Festival on June 14, 2023, and is due to be released on Netflix on July 21, 2023. They Cloned Tyrone is just one of the major releases coming to Netflix this year, with the likes of action movie sequel Extraction 2, the rom-com The Perfect Find, and the animated adaptation of Nimona all due to land on the streaming service this month.
