Superman: Legacy will officially be the first film in the upcoming DCU, but we’ll be a getting a look at its first character just next month when Blue Beetle drops into theaters. It’s certainly a wise move from all of those involved with the film; connecting oneself with the DC Extended Universe at this point is begging for box office disaster.
There’s quite a bit going for Blue Beetle, being the first major Latino-led superhero film about one of DC Comics’ most colorful, fascinating, and likeable characters; all we need now is confirmation that it won’t be egregiously formulaic like most of its DCEU ancestors.
But there is one practice that Blue Beetle apparently won’t leave behind, though to be fair, it’s near impossible to make a shared universe without it these days. According to leading man Xolo Maridueña in an interview with TheWrap, we can expect a cheeky cameo or two from the film.
“I think if you’re a DC fan, there’s going to be more than just one character that you recognize. I can tell you that.”
Given what we know about the incoming DCU and the character as a whole, we can anticipate any number of faces turning up in Blue Beetle; in the comics, Blue Beetle has been a member of both the Justice League and the Teen Titans, making for a gold mine of potential cameos right there.
The comics also see him befriend Booster Gold, the best friend of the Scarab’s previous holder Ted Kord, and we happen to know that we’ll be getting a Booster Gold series at some point during the first wave of DCU projects. And with Booster Gold’s deep connection to time travel, perhaps this potential, fateful meeting is how Blue Beetle is brought into the DCU fold.
Blue Beetle releases to theaters on Aug. 18.
