If you have been following Sony’s smartphone plans for 2024, the Xperia 5 VI shouldn’t be a mystery to you. Earlier in July, a rugged Spigen case for the device was leaked hinting at some of its design. Besides, some reports claimed it would feature a single 8GB RAM variant. While many expected Sony to launch the Xperia 5 VI in September, the company has reportedly confirmed that it is not coming this year.

Sony reportedly confirmed the Xperia 5 VI is not coming this year

Today, the Japanese website Impress Watch reported that Sony has officially announced that it won’t launch the Xperia 5 VI this year. The news outlet also confirmed that Sony plans to continue selling the Xperia 5 V instead. Although this news is nothing less than a surprise, the company has detailed the reasons for not launching the device this year.

The company’s representatives reportedly said that the launch delay is the result of changes in user needs. Apparently, there has been an increase in the number of Xperia 5 users switching to the Xperia 1 series. This has eventually shrunk the Xperia 5’s already limited user base. So, it is safe to assume that Sony doesn’t want to suffer low sales of the Xperia 5 VI, especially with the Xperia 1 VI already out in the market.

There’s no word on the future launch

As you may know, the Xperia 5 series is popular for its compact form factor. Most of the Xperia 5 series smartphones feature a standard 6.1-inch display. In fact, the rumored phone is also said to feature a 6.1-inch OLED display. However, such display specs aren’t a norm thesedays considering other smartphone brands in the market.

All that said, Sony hasn’t revealed if or when it will launch the Xperia 5 VI. So, it is uncertain if the company will launch it in 2025 or discontinue the series altogether. Moreover, if you are waiting for the device, all you can do is wait.
