“A beloved Roald Dahl story about a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling,” the official synopsis for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar reads.

Anderson has amassed a stellar cast for his short film, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring as Henry Sugar alongside Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, Richard Ayoade, and Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival earlier this month and has been met with rave reviews from those lucky enough to have been in attendance. Ben Rolph from Discussing Film awarded the movie 5/5 and says, “Having a limit on the runtime allows Anderson to challenge himself and focus on making the most charming and slender movie possible.”

Variety’s Peter Debruge meanwhile says, “The “Fantastic Mr. Fox” author’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems to have found its ideal screen incarnation in the “Fantastic Mr. Fox” director’s hands…” while Leslie Felperin of The Hollywood Reporter sums things up by saying, “Small but perfectly crafted.”

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More is a collection of seven short stories written by Roald Dahl, and includes The Boy Who Talked with Animals, The Hitch-Hiker, and the autobiographical tale A Piece of Cake. And Wes Anderson has big plans to bring more into live action alongside The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

“There’s another one that’s in the ‘Henry Sugar’ collection that’s called ‘The Swan,’ we’ve done that with Rupert Friend,” Anderson said. “We did a very old one called ‘Poison,’ which is one I always loved… And then we’ve also done a very, very strange one called ‘Ratcatcher,’ which is from a book called ‘Claud’s Dog,’ a kind of obscure Dahl book set in the Eastern part of England. It’s a really rural one, it’s a peculiar story. And they’re all strange. But I don’t really have any other ones in mind. I have some things brewing, but that might be it for Dahl for the moment.”

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is due to have a limited theatrical release on September 20, 2023, with the adaptation scheduled to land on Netflix on September 27, 2023.
