The Witcher series has always been about the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, but it seems the Witcher 4 won’t be following this path. Instead, the next upcoming mainline game will follow the adventures of another character entirely.
That’s according to IGN who spoke with Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle about CDPR’s next big game for the Witcher series. “Their focus for the game is not going to be Geralt. They’ve said that, so I’m really excited to see what their focus is. I have ideas but that’s all they are,” Cockle says in an interview with IGN.
The question then remains. If the next mainline Witcher game, codenamed Polaris, isn’t about Geralt, then who’s taking the center stage? If you’ve played any of the Witcher games you might have some theories of your own. And some may not be as weird as you might think.
If you haven’t played the games, let it be known that there will be some spoilers here in this article going forward.
If the Witcher 4 isn’t focusing on Geralt, who does it focus on?
It’s a strange thought to have a mainline game that doesn’t focus on Geralt. After three games and a series of books as well as a Netflix show, the games may depart from its well-known protagonist. In Geralt’s place, Cockle’s theory is that CDPR might choose to make Ciri the focus of the game’s story. Ciri does make sense after all. She’s central to some of the story threads and is Geralt’s charge. She comes up as a Witcher after years of training and is quite powerful.
This theory is based on one single image that CDPR has shared since Polaris was first announced. A Witcher cat medallion. Ciri wears a cat school medallion in the books. The image associated with the project also features a cat school medallion. The natural direction one might think, would be toward focusing on Ciri and exploring some more of her story and her powers.
The Witcher 4 is still years away
The next game in the series has been in development for years and is still a few years away from launch. That gives the studio plenty of time to flesh out any story beats that might need shoring up before all of the narrative is set in stone.
As CBR notes, CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed the game won’t be ready “for an extended period of time.” That could put how big the game is into perspective. Since CDPR has also confirmed recently that the next mainline game in the series has over 330 developers working on it. The number is expected to grow significantly by the middle of next year.
CDPR is also working on a Witcher remake that’s being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
