The US and Swedish governments have signed a partnership to collaborate on the research and development of 6G technology. This partnership reportedly involves collaboration between the private sectors, which is expected to be crucial for the development of a sustainable 6G network.
The US & Sweden’s collaboration is expected to go beyond the development of 6G network
The Joint Statement Endorsing Principles for 6G and the US-EU Trade and Technology Council’s 6G vision highlight that the collaboration aims to ensure that the 6G technology will be resilient, secure, safe, trustworthy, inclusive, and sustainable. This development will reportedly use new spectrum allocated by future wireless services/technologies and introduce new technologies in existing frequency bands. This way the agreement looks forward to seeing the countries identifying synergies exploring possibilities and creating a joint ecosystem for research and development in 6G technology.
Both the US and Sweden will also reportedly work on global harmonization of frequency bands for 6G and next-generation wireless technologies. The two countries will also explore possibilities for long-term research collaboration, which includes potential funding for relevant bilateral research collaboration. It aims to strengthen different aspects of 6G and its future networking technologies such as security, trust, and privacy. Notably, artificial intelligence will also be a part of the research collaboration.
Efficient use of communication and computing resources, materials, cybersecurity, edge computing, algorithms, distributed intelligence, open architectures, advanced micro-electronics, and data resources will all be part of the collaborative research on the next generation of wireless networking technology.
Back in April this year, Sweden’s Research Council and Vinnova reportedly signed a five-year declaration of intent for the development of 6G and related technologies with the US National Science Foundation (NSF), which aims to facilitate the partnership between the two countries. Notably, it considered 6G connectivity as one of the key aspects of the development.
The Swedish Government also confirmed that they were making a specific investment in research and development of 6G networking technologies. As a result, the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova SEK received 390 million to invest in research in 2024 and the coming years.
It’s not the first time the US is collaborating on 6G development
The US signed a partnership with Finland back in June last year that also aims to collaborate for the development of advanced wireless networking technologies. Specifically speaking, it focused on the development of advanced 5G, 6G, and future networking technologies. The agreement also demonstrated the importance of Nokia, Ericsson and related ecosystems for the development.
According to the official statement from the US Department of State, the goal was “searching for synergies and exploring possibilities to create a joint ecosystem for research and development in 6G communications and sensing applications”.
