The new trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived with a better look at Chris Pratt’s lead character and more.

Everyone has been able to have their opinion on Chris Pratt’s voicing of Mario since the first teaser for Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie delivered one line of his dialogue. Now the new trailer will kick-start the debate again as it delivers a better look at Pratt’s take on the Nintendo icon as well as the first appearance of Seth Rogan’s Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach. Check out the new trailer below and judge for yourself.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has caused a stir for all the wrong reasons. While the grumbles about Pratt’s casting are not going to stop the movie from doing well at the box office, it has been enough to see plenty of differing opinions from both fans and stars alike. One person who has been frequently outspoken about the movie’s choice of cast is John Leguizamo, who played Luigi in the 90s Super Mario Bros. film. Previously Leguizamo said:

“I’m O.G. A lot of people love the original. I did Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore, and everyone’s like, ‘No, no, we love the old one, the original.’ They’re not feeling the new one. I’m not bitter. It’s unfortunate. The [1993 movie] directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought really hard for me to be the lead because I was a Latin man, and they [the studio] didn’t want me to be the lead. They fought really hard, and it was such a breakthrough. For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks.”

Despite various comments, Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie will undoubtedly be another hit for Illumination, who already have one of the biggest animated franchises under their belt with the Despicable Me and Minions movies. While the movie is still a good few months away from being released, a new piece of key art from the film was released ahead of the trailer. As can be seen below, the image gives a first look inside the palace of Princess Peach, which has been beautifully rendered as have all of the visuals of the film.

Along with Pratt, the movie boasts a stellar ensemble cast of voices including Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike. While there has been plenty of noise made about long-term Mario voice actor Charles Martinet not being cast in the lead role, the actor is still part of the movie, providing a yet to be announced cameo appearance.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has found its release date being juggled around a little. Originally the film was scheduled to be released this December, but like many other movies, the arrival of Avatar: The Way of Water seemed to scare them off. Now Mario fans have to wait until April 7, 2023, to see the plumber going on the first of what is likely to be many new adventures being planned as part of a new Nintendo Universe.
