The official synopsis for The Road Dog reads as follows:
“The Road Dog tells the story of Jimmy Quinn, a veteran of stand-up comedy’s glory days; he is also an alcoholic. His life changes when his son David, who he abandoned as a child, shows up at his door, professing his desire to be a stand-up comedian.”
Co-written, directed and produced by Greg Glienna, whose 1992 indie Meet the Parents served as the basis for the same-name Uni comedy starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, The Road Dog stars Doug Stanhope as Jimmy Quinn alongside newcomer Des Mulrooney, Khrystyne Haje (Scrambled, Law & Order), stand-up comedian and television writer/producer Greg Fitzsimmons (Crashing), Tim Kazurinsky (The Pack Podcast, the Police Academy films), and Calvin Evans (South Side, Chicago P.D.).
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Freestyle Digital Media on the release of The Road Dog,” director Greg Glienna said of the project, revealing his desire to make a human story lacking in spandex-sporting superheroes. “Our mission at CEM Productions is to bring great scripts to life, with relatable human stories and no characters in spandex!”
Doug Stanhope Leads The Road Dog
The Road Dog tells the story of aging, alcoholic comedian Jimmy Quinn, with author, and award-winning actor, and brilliant stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope taking the lead. A veteran of stand-up comedy’s glory days (in both real-life and in the movie), Jimmy is left stunned when his long-estranged son, David (Mulrooney), also an aspiring comedian, seeks him out. Jimmy offers to take him on the road and show him the ropes. They begin to grow close, but tensions rise due to Jimmy’s self-destructive behavior. Ultimately, Jimmy must decide what he values most.
The Road Dog was co-written by Tony Boswell, who produced the film alongside Glienna, Kamron Leal, Yasuein Paradise, Stanhope, and Brian Hennigan. The film’s deal was negotiated between Freestyle Digital Media, Glienna and his CEM Productions.
Recently finishing its weeklong theatrical engagement at Pickwick Theatre in Chicago, The Road Dog will become available across North America on digital and platforms Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube Movies, and on demand beginning October 6th.
