One of the most successful Spanish films to date, The Platform, will get a sequel on Netflix in October 2024.

The first movie, released in 2019, remains Netflix’s fifth most-watched non-English movie, accruing 129.70 million hours watched in the first 91 days, equating to 82.80 million views.

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is returning to write, direct, and produce the sequel, which Netflix first unveiled in May 2023, confirming that production had begun as of May 11th and unveiled some first looks at the sequel. The sequel was shot in Bilbao and Bizkaia in Spain.

El Hoyo is the Spanish name for the first movie depicting a vertical prison with one cell per level and a platform moving between cells with prisoners granted two minutes to eat daily. The film debuted to mostly universal acclaim, with Thrillist calling it “a Twilight Zone-level mind-bender mixed with a dark psychological horror film full of pointed social commentary.”

Aitor Etxebarria is the sequel’s composer, and Jon Sangroniz is the cinematographer. Carlos Juárez, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, and Raquel Perea from the Basque Films team are producing.

Let’s dig into the sequel, beginning with the first look teaser trailer:

What to Expect from The Platform 2

The sequel, rated TV-MA, will continue the same basic premise established in the first movie.

Per Netflix, here’s the official synopsis for The Platform 2:

“As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”

Who are the cast members of The Platform 2?

Two cast members were confirmed for The Platform 2, with the sequel notably rotating the cast from the first movie.

Those two cast members are Milena Smit, playing the role of Perempaun, and Hovik Keuchkerian, who is playing the role of Zamiatin.

The Platform 2 will be the first Netflix movie for actress Milena Smit and her third Netflix project overall. She previously starred in the Spanish series The Girl in the Mirror and, more recently, The Snow Girl.

Money Heist fans should recognize Hovik Keuchkerian as Bogota, a member of the crew who carried out the robbery of the Bank of Spain. He also starred in the 2016 live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.
