We know what you’re going to say, “The Pixel 9 just launched! Why the hell are we talking about the Pixel 9a?!” Well, that’s the way the tech mill runs. Shortly after seeing some supposedly live images of the upcoming Pixel 9a, we got some information about the chip powering it. The Pixel 9a could use the Tensor G4, but it might use an older modem.

If you don’t know what images we’re talking about, you can check out the Pixel 9a live images. From the looks of it, this will be the first Pixel phone since the Pixel 5a to not sport a camera visor. In fact, it doesn’t even look like a Pixel phone at all. This makes us doubt that these images are real. If Google launches this phone on its usual schedule, then we won’t see this phone for about another nine months.

The Pixel 9a might not have an impressive modem

The Pixel 9 phones just launched, and they’re all sporting a new Tensor G4 SoC. This is the most recent and smartest chip from Google. It gives them some impressive AI chops and, depending on the carrier that you’re on, it can give you some fast internet.

Well, when the Pixel 9a comes out, it might not be as blazing fast as the Pixel 9 proper when it comes to internet connection. The Tensor G4 comes with Samsung’s Exynos 5400 modem. Last year’s Tensor G3 came with the Exynos 5300.

According to the report, the version of the Tensor G4 that will be in the Pixel 9a will come with the older Exynos 5300 modem. That would be a bit of a bummer if the Pixel 9a was meant to be a flagship phone. However, this phone will come with the usual hardware compromises to keep the price down. While it’s unlikely that this omission will lead to a lower price tag compared to the Pixel 8a (Review), one can always dream.

This should go without saying, but you’ll want to take this news cautiously. We’re dealing with very early information, and there’s no telling if there will be some changes between now and the official launch.
