Google just held its yearly event, Google I/O. Along with announcing new stuff to get excited about (like the Pixel 7),  the company used the event as a progress report to let us know how it’s been doing. While talking about the Pixel 6 phones today, the company announced that these phones already outsold the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 4 series combined.

The fact that the Pixel 6 outsold these phones is surprising and unsurprising

It’s great to hear that the Pixel 6 continues to make sales. All over social media, people are still posting about buying their new Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro months after the launch. It’s been able to hold its own through the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, which was insanely popular.

It shouldn’t be too much of a shock to some people that the Pixel 6 outsold its predecessors. Through the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 series of phones, the excitement waned a bit for the Pixel brand. This was most evident with the Pixel 5. This was a mid-ranger with no premium counterpart. Then, out of nowhere came the Pixel 6 with its more exciting features and design.

However, while some people might not be underwhelmed by this news, there are some people who are actually surprised.  While the Pixel 6 is a generally well-received series, it was plagued with countless issues at the beginning. One of the biggest controversies was with the fingerprint scanner. People reported horror stories of extremely slow performance, inaccurate readings, and worse.

Also, there were connectivity issues that continue to upset people. Lastly, we can’t forget about the notable Wi-Fi issue that affected phones running the stable version of Android 12 with the February security patch. Despite these issues, Google was still able to bring people onboard and sell more devices.

Google looks to continue this momentum with the Pixel 6a

Google didn’t only pull the wraps off of the Pixel 7, it also gave us a look at the Pixel 6a. This is going to be the mid-cycle release for 2022, and Google is looking to make this a good one.

The Pixel 6a will retain the design language established with the Pixel 6 with the noticeable visor on the back. It looks to be slightly smaller, and there’s a ring around the cameras. Other than that, it’s the spitting image of the Pixel 6.

Google confirmed that it’s going to have two 12MP cameras. One will be the main camera, and the other is going to be the ultrawide. As for the processor, the rumors were correct; the Pixel 6a will use the same Tensor chip that’s powering your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro. This phone will be available for pre-order starting on July 21st with the official sale starting July 28th.
