As it gets ever-closer to the Nintendo Direct featuring the Nintendo Switch 2, one of the many unknowns that consumers want to know about is the price, and a new rumor (or rather, speculation) is suggesting that it’ll be pretty comparable to Sony’s last-gen console, the PS4.
The original Nintendo Switch launched at a price of $299.99. Meanwhile, the PS4 launched at a price of $399.99. This $100 difference in price reflects in large part the difference in performance between the two consoles. Sony’s PS4 was considerably more powerful with games that featured better graphics, while the console also supported higher resolution and higher frame rates. Of course, that didn’t stop the Nintendo Switch from becoming one of the best-selling game consoles of all time, or Nintendo’s best-selling console to date.
That could have been different if the Switch price was higher. However, that wouldn’t necessarily be the case if the console was more powerful. The Nintendo Switch 2 is supposed to offer that kind of experience. With performance rumored to be somewhere close to the Steam Deck.
New rumor says the Nintendo Switch 2 price could be $399.99
With regard to the price, Nintendo may end up charging about $399.99 for the Switch 2. That’s the belief of Joost van Dreunen, co-founder of the SuperData research firm. Joost van Dreunen recently published a fairly lengthy analysis of Nintendo’s future plans. In it, he mentions that he believes Nintendo will charge $399.99 for the Switch 2, given its improvements in performance and new features.
This would be a reasonable price point for the console and puts it on par with other consoles and gaming devices that would provide similar performance. Nintendo, of course, has not yet confirmed what the Switch 2 will cost. The company hasn’t even shared any of the specs, or what its features will be. As of right now, all that’s officially known about the Switch 2 is the design. Nintendo revealed the upcoming console back in January.
It comes with a larger display, larger Joy-Con controllers, and a new U-shaped kickstand. Additional rumors have also suggested you might be able to use the Joy-Con controllers like a mouse. It’s also suspected that you can attach them upside down. The latter rumor is based on the belief that it’s Nintendo’s intention to allow this for the purposes of deciding button orientation. As well as allowing the decision to choose where you want the headphone jack and charging port to be.
Nintendo should reveal the price during the upcoming Direct event
Since Nintendo hasn’t revealed anything about the Switch 2 yet other than the design, the most likely time for the company to reveal the price is during the upcoming Nintendo Direct. Nintendo has confirmed that this event is happening on April 2. April 2 is also much closer to the suspected release window. Which is thought to be somewhere between April and September. It would make sense, then, that Nintendo would announce the pricing during this event.
Whether or not it actually ends up being $399.99 is still unclear. It seems unlikely to be $349.99. As this was the launch price for the Switch OLED, and the Switch 2 is supposed to be a considerably more powerful console.
