The next mainline Witcher game is likely to be The Witcher 4 (CDPR has not confirmed this as the official name), and it now has a massive development team. CD PROJEKT RED confirmed in its quarterly earnings report that the team has now grown to include around 330 developers. That number is expected to grow to an even larger team of around 400 developers by the middle of next year. That’s according to CD PROJEKT RED’s CEO Adam Kiciński (via VGC).
Kiciński doesn’t mention anything about the remaining development time on the game or its current progress. But with the development team growing by around 70 more people by the middle of next year, it’s quite likely that we won’t be seeing this game for a while. In a roadmap the studio released last year, it revealed it was working on a new Witcher trilogy. The plan the studio said, is to have all three games in the trilogy out within six years of the first game’s release.
Of course, that doesn’t shed light on the timing of the launch for the next mainline game. But it does provide a little insight as to what the roadmap looks like. CDPR also stated in its initial roadmap announcement that the first game (presumably The Witcher 4) was in pre-production. So it’s been in development for at least a year at this point.
The Witcher 4 development team is now CD PROJEKT RED’s largest ever
At a current number of 330 developers the team working on The Witcher 4, known as Project Polaris, is the largest ever for CD PROJEKT RED. Before this shift to Project Polaris, the studio had about 300 people working on Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion. But many of those have moved on to working on Polaris and other related projects.
More Witcher projects are in the works
Project Polaris isn’t the only Witcher game being worked on. Although it very well could be the next one that launches. In addition to this game, there’s also a remake of the original Witcher game in development. As well as a Witcher spin-off game known internally as Project Sirius.
