Amazon Games has announced a partnership with Crystal Dynamics to develop and publish the next Tomb Raider game. Making this Amazon’s biggest title yet. Though admittedly that isn’t too hard of a goal to reach seeing as Amazon only has a few games under its belt. Still, it’s a big pull for Amazon.
Tomb Raider is a globally recognized franchise that’s been around since the days of the original PlayStation. And it’s gone through numerous game releases across platform generations, re-releases, spin-offs, and an entirely remade trilogy. There’s also a series of comics and movies. As well as a plethora of toys and other items based on the franchise. Simply put, Tomb Raider is a massive property and Amazon scored big here.
Tomb Raider used to be a Square Enix property but earlier this year the publisher announced it would be selling off its western studios. Which included Crystal Dynamics (the studio behind Tomb Raider) and Deus Ex studio Eidos Montréal. Both those studios are now owned by Embracer Group.
Amazon says the new Tomb Raider stays true to its roots
Those worried that Amazon having a hand in this game’s development probably have no cause for concern. While Amazon didn’t handle Crucible well, and New World has had its fair share of hiccups, the Amazon-published Lost Ark is doing quite well and has been going strong since launch. With a “mostly positive” rating on Steam.
More importantly though, the new Tomb Raider game, Amazon says, “includes all the elements that have made Tomb Raider one of the most revered franchises in gaming.” The title will be single-player and driven by a heavy focus on the narrative with a continuation of Lara’s story. Expect plenty of puzzle solving mixed in with the action as well.
The game will also be multi-platform which means it should be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it’s being built in Unreal Engine 5. Amazon says this is the “biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date.” Right now the game is still in very early development so it probably isn’t coming out anytime soon. In the meantime, players can revisit the remade trilogy.
