The first trailer for action-comedy outing The Man from Toronto has Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson as an odd couple forced to team up when their lives suffer an unwelcome crossover. Coming courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, the first footage from The Man from Toronto brings with it a release date, with the action flick due to land on the streaming service on June 24.

Directed by Patrick Hughes, who is best known for similar action flicks such as The Expendables 3, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and last year’s sequel Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, The Man from Toronto stars Woody Harrelson and Kevin Hart as the world’s deadliest assassin and New York’s biggest screw-up, Teddy, respectively. A case of mistaken identity forces the bumbling Teddy, an entrepreneur, to team up with the notorious assassin known as The Man from Toronto.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The pair is confused for one another while staying at an Airbnb, and Teddy is thrown into an explosive adventure alongside the world-class killer in hopes of staying alive. Based on the footage, Kevin Hart will once again ply his trade as an out-of-depth, silly, squealing everyman, something which has made him a comedy commodity over the last few years. Woody Harrelson, meanwhile, appears to be pitch-perfect casting as the mysterious assassin and the movie’s straight-man.

Written by Robbie Fox from a story by Fox and Jason Blumenthal, The Man from Toronto stars Kaley Cuoco, Ellen Barkin, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Jencarlos Canela, and Kate Drummond alongside the one-two punch of Woody Harrelson and Kevin Hart. Pierson Fodé and Tomohisa Yamashita also star as fellow assassins The “Man from Miami” and The “Man from Tokyo” respectively.

The Man from Toronto Will Skip Theaters in Favor of a Netflix Release

The Man from Toronto was initially intended to be a vehicle for action movie superstar Jason Statham, who would have played the title role. Though Jason Statham’s exact reasons for withdrawing from the project remain unclear, it has been alleged that there were creative differences between Statham and Sony Pictures. Notably, it’s alleged that Sony was looking to make the movie PG-13, while Statham wanted The Man from Toronto to be R-rated.

Statham departing the project was just one of several changes made during the production of The Man from Toronto, with the movie initially scheduled to be theatrically released by Sony Pictures Releasing. Instead, The Man from Toronto will skip a traditional theatrical release, instead debuting on Netflix.

The Man from Toronto is just one of several major projects set for release on the streaming service this year. Hollywood A-listers Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans will go head-to-head in the upcoming spy thriller The Gray Man, which is due for release in July; director Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig will return to continue the tale of Benoit Blanc in Knives Out 2, which will debut sometime this year; and, finally, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman has at last been given the live-action treatment and will premiere in 2022.

The Man from Toronto will debut on Netflix on June 24, 2022.
