We’re slowly getting a more fleshed-out idea of what’s coming up on Netflix in the United States throughout July 2024, and we’ve learned the historical sports drama The Long Game, directed by Julio Quintana, is now part of the lineup.
First released at SXSW in March 2023 before becoming more widely available in April 2024, the historical drama tells the true story of the San Felipe Mustangs, a group of Mexican-American youths based in Del Rio, Texas, who overcome the odds of the 1950s to become state golf champions.
Mucho Mas Releasing is behind the title’s release. Its Netflix debut is now planned for July 12th, marking the movie’s first time on an SVOD streamer (meaning a subscription service rather than VOD).
As mentioned, Jay Hernandez is the main draw of the movie, playing the role of JB Peña with Dennis Quaid playing Frank Mitchell. Rounding out the cast includes Julian Works, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Brett Cullen, Oscar Nuñez, Paulina Chávez, and Gregory Diaz IV.
Following the movie’s release just a few months ago, it went on to pick up good reviews across the board from audiences and critics alike. RottenTomatoes carries it 81% from critics, while from audiences, it holds 97%.
Kate Sánchez, in her review published on But Why Tho? discusses some of the sensitive issues examined throughout the movie in her positive review. She says, “The Long Game hits all the notes you expect from a film about a marginalized group needing a white person to open the door for them to show that they belong in spaces. But it manages to avoid falling into the white savior trappings also associated with the genre.
While you’re waiting, you can also catch a number of other Dennis Quaid titles on Netflix. Netflix teamed up with Quaid on the 2021 Blue Miracle, and more recently, Netflix US secured the SVOD rights to The Hill in early 2024.
This isn’t the only SVOD premiere Netflix has lined up for the United States in July 2024. Yesterday, we reported that The Neon Highway, starring Beau Bridges and Rob Mayes, will join the streamer on July 11th. In addition, Netflix will carry Trolls Band Together following its brief tenure on Peacock.
