The Killer is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alexis Nolent aka Matz with artist Luc Jacamon, which focuses on a cruel and ruthless killer who is going through an emotional and psychological crisis. To adapt the story, Fincher has reunited after more than 20 years with Andrew Kevin Walker, with whom he worked on Seven.

The Killer will be the twelfth film in Fincher’s filmography, which began in 1992 with Alien 3, perhaps one of his least appreciated works. His latest film, Mank, which can also be seen on Netflix, was one of the main stars of the 2020-2021 awards season.

The director has accumulated 92 nominations for the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs with his films, and a total of 20 awards won in those same celebrations, among many others. Making the expectations for The Killer very high. It has even been stated by Venice Film Festival Chief Alberto Barbera that The Killer is so good it will find itself among the contenders at the next Academy Award ceremony.

After The Killer, Fincher and Netflix will also reportedly reunite on a prequel series of the 1974 classic Chinatown, which will focus on the first days of the private investigator Jake Gittes, picking up before the events featured in the Roman Polanski film. He’ll be writing it along with Robert Towne, who wrote the script for the original movie.

The Killer is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2023, and is scheduled to begin a limited theatrical release on October 27, 2023, before streaming on November 10, 2023, by Netflix.
