2020 was a good year for horror, with dystopia coming to life with the COVID panic and restrictions and a huge lineup of genuinely scary films making quarantine a little enjoyable. While the year delivered celebrated horror titles like The Curse of La Llorona, Extra Ordinary, His House, and The Mortuary Collection, there were a few films that escaped the radar. The Jack in the Box is one such film. The May 2020 scare show announced a sequel shortly after, and 4Digital Media has recently revealed the trailer of The Jack in the Box: Awakening.
The nightmare that started in The Jack in the Box is far from over, and this time the captured demon has a new pawn. According to the official synopsis:
Terminally ill heiress Olga Marsdale acquires a mysterious gothic box containing a captured demon – Jack. The powerful entity within makes a deadly deal with Olga and her devoted son Edgar – deliver six victims to Jack and Olga will live. They trap several unsuspecting victims for him within the vast crumbling mansion – but can they deliver all six before it’s too late? Or will Amy, the young and innocent woman recently hired to look after the estate turn out to be more than a match for both the family and the Jack?
While The Jack in the Box remained rather unnoticed at the time of its release, it still has popularity among horror lovers despite being averagely rated on IMDb (4.2/10). Not to mention, Jack is the latest addition to the roster of toy demons in Hollywood. Considering this, it can be expected that The Jack in the Box: Awakening will find better reception among horror fans compared to the first one.
The cast of the film features a rather talented group of actors as well, including faces quite popular in recent horror films and shows. James Swanton, a known face in horror films, plays the demon Jack in the sequel, and EastEnders star Nicola Wright plays the ill-fated Olga Marsdale. Matt McClure, best known for his work in the Bafta award-winning gangster drama The Wee Man, stars as Olga’s son Edgar in The Jack in the Box: Awakenings. The Scottish actor also starred in Showtime’s acclaimed series Penny Dreadful.
Lawrence Fowler has returned as the writer/director, as well as producer (along with Geoff Fowler, under the Fowler Media Limited banner) of the sequel. 4Digital Media is in charge of the film’s distribution.
The original The Jack in the Box was released in May 2020. In that movie:
When a museum is donated a vintage Jack-In-The-Box, it s not long before staff member Casey starts to think that the creepy clown doll inside has a life of its own. As he discovers his colleagues are dying, one by one, Casey realizes it’s up to him to find a way to end the nightmare or become another victim of the box’s curse.
The box reopens on January 18, 2022, when The Jack in the Box: Awakening is released on VOD, Digital HD & DVD in the United States. The UK has an earlier release date of January 3.
