Some of Samsung’s latest flagship phones include a car crash detection sensor. It has been useless until now because the company has not enabled the feature for unknown reasons. Recent findings suggest that this will change in the upcoming Galaxy S25 series thanks to proper support for car crash detection.
Models like the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 feature the car crash sensor. It’s not actually a dedicated piece of hardware but a “virtual sensor” that works by processing data obtained from other physical sensors, such as the accelerometer, compass, and others. You’d never want to use this feature for obvious reasons; however, it’s good to have tools that can help speed up the arrival of medical attention if necessary.
Galaxy S25 devices could be compatible with the car crash detection feature
As spotted by Android Authority in leaked files from the Galaxy S25 Ultra, there are references to car crash detection. Based on some lines of code, it looks like the brand’s next flagship phones will have the software to make the feature work. In fact, the alleged dedicated app, called “MoccaMobile,” has been available since One UI 5.1.1, according to the source. However, for one reason or another, Samsung has never enabled it.
Perhaps the company has been working on polishing the feature before rolling it out to all compatible devices. After all, car crash detection is a sensitive issue. Samsung needs to make sure that the detections are correct and that there aren’t too many false positives. The reason behind the presence of the sensor in older models, even if the feature is not ready, could be to make them more future-proof.
Will older models get it too?
The S25 lineup could feature the exact same virtual sensor as previous-generation Galaxy phones. So, it’s possible that the company will also make older devices able to detect car crash incidents. However, for now, this is just speculation, but it would be great news for users of these devices.
Samsung is reportedly set to announce the Galaxy S25 series in January during the first Unpacked of 2025. In addition to the classic vanilla, Plus, and Ultra models, the firm could also announce a Slim variant.
