Anticipation continues to grow for The Flash, which is finally coming to theaters this summer after several delays. But while it’s a movie that puts Ezra Miller front and center as multiple versions of Barry Allen, the inclusion of multiple returning Batmen has certainly added to that fan excitement. Of course, the film features the return of Michael Keaton after he left the role following 1992’s Batman Returns, while Ben Affleck‘s more recent incarnation of the Dark Knight is also featured. You can see both of them highlighted below in a new teaser trailer for the film, via Geek Vibes Nation.
The teaser picks up with Barry Allen touching on why he’s intent to zip back to the past in order to save his mother, despite knowing the dangers of time travel. Affleck’s Bruce Wayne warns about the major unintended consequences that could come with Barry’s plan, having a much better sense of what’s about to happen than the optimistic Flash. The DCEU’s Batmen tells Barry that he could very well “destroy everything.”
Given what else we’ve seen in other trailers, it’s clear that Barry does not heed this advice, and his time-traveling antics have resulted in a fracturing of the multiverse. While that allows for some of the more nefarious personalities to pop up and wreak havoc, it also keeps the door open for Keaton’s Batman to also return in the same movie as the Affleck version. That’s a good thing for The Flash, who asks the classic Batman for assistance with cleaning up the giant mess the superhero accidentally caused.
“Want some help?” Keaton’s Dark Knight tells the Barrys, going on to say his trademark phrase, “I’m Batman.”
A Last Hurrah for These Batmen?
Keaton’s Batman appears to have a much bigger part in the film in comparison to Batfleck. Affleck previously spoke about how proud he is of his scenes in The Flash, feeling it’s some of his best work he had done in the role, but he also divulged that he’s hardly in the actual movie. While some more screen time would be nice for the Batfleck fans, the limited appearance still lets Affleck give his Batman a better send-off than how things were left with Justice League‘s tumultuous production.
“The Justice League experience, the fact that those stories became somewhat repetitive to me and less interesting,” Affleck explained, per THR. “Yeah, I did finally figure out how to play that character [Batman], and I nailed it in The Flash. For the five minutes I’m there, it’s really great.”
Andy Muschietti directs the film using a screenplay by Christina Hodson; the story comes from John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold. Along with Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, and Ben Affleck, the movie features Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Michael Shannon as General Zod, and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West.
The Flash will be premiering in movie theaters on June 16, 2023, following a premiere screening at CinemaCon on April 25.
