With The Flash due to land in theaters from next week, the first reviews have now emerged, with the DC movie now sitting at a ‘fresh’ 71% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb’s own Greg Archer heaps praise on Ezra Miller’s central performance saying, “They are The Flash. And this is the summer DC movie we’ve been waiting for,” and loved seeing Michael Keaton back in the batsuit; “This film should get special bonus points for bringing back Michael Keaton, however. The actor slips back into the bat suit quite nicely.”

This clip is just one of several slices of footage released from The Flash, with an earlier TV spot putting the focus on Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle in the film. The spot features audio of Calle introducing herself to Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen, aka The Flash, asking why it is that the speedy superhero helped her when she was incapacitated, including a flashback of their first meeting. She also teases her abilities, with the clip showcasing snippets of Supergirl in combat… along with how easily she can destroy a stone gargoyle. You can watch the TV spot below.

Calle is the first Latina actress to play Supergirl. She follows various live-action portrayals of the character to be portrayed on-screen in years past, dating back to the 1984 film with Helen Slater in the role. Laura Vandervoort would later play Supergirl in the prequel series Smallville while Melissa Benoist would suit up for the role in the Arrowverse series Supergirl. There is an upcoming Supergirl-centric film in early development at DC Studios, titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but it remains unclear if James Gunn and Peter Safran plan to bring back Calle’s incarnation for that film, or if they’ll be recasting the role.

For now, Calle is our Supergirl, and she’s making the best of it. She recently celebrated the release of a Supergirl Barbie doll featuring her likeness, sharing iimages of her posing with the collectible on her Twitter account. Calle also shared a video of herself making the Supergirl doll fly, clearly having great fun with the miniature version of herself.

“There’s a [Barbie] that looks like me,” Calle said on Twitter. “I don’t know how to act. I’ve been taking her everywhere.. flying around and imagining laser eyes haha. Abrazos enormes!! Todavía no me la creo.”

Calle’s Supergirl is one of the three lead characters who have been featured heavily in the promotional materials for The Flash. The others would be Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen/The Flash and Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. Trailers have also revealed some of the other big characters that will appear in the film, such as Ben Affleck’s incarnation of Batman from the DCEU, as well as Man of Steel villain General Zod with Michael Shannon reprising the role. There are going to be many other big surprises fans will see on the big screen that weren’t divulged in the trailers, though director Andy Muschietti recently let it slip that another big one related to Superman will be featured.

Directed by Muschietti, The Flash was written by Christina Hodson with a story by Joby Harold, John Francis Daley, and Jonathan Goldstein. Other actors confirmed to appear in the movie include Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdu, Kiersey Clemons, and Antje Traue. It is produced by Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco.

The Flash will be speeding its way into movie theaters on June 16, 2023. The film is tracking to have a spectacular performance at the box office financially, and that will only help Calle’s odds of reprising the role of Supergirl for another project.
