Anthropic is one of the major AI companies on the market, and it’s a competitor to Google’s Gemini. However, did you know that Google actually invested $2 billion into Anthropic? That’s right; both Google and Amazon invested in Anthropic, and this has the U.S. DOJ (Department Of Justice) on edge. According to a new report, the DOJ wants to break up the relationship between Google and Anthropic.

2024 is NOT a good year for Google. It lost two ground-shaking antitrust lawsuits in the span of a year, and it could be on track to lose its third. Not only that, but the government could force Google to sell off Chrome, the world’s most popular internet browser. We can’t deny that Google throws its weight and money around to grab a chunk of any market it wants. The question is how long it can be allowed to do this.

The DOJ wants Google to break up with Anthropic

The U.S. DOJ is a major thorn in Google’s side right now, and it could hurt the company’s AI ambitions. As part of an ongoing antitrust case, the government does not want Google working with or acquiring any companies for the sake of boosting its AI technology.

At this point, Google hasn’t expressed any interest in buying Anthropic, and we don’t expect it to try. However, there’s an ongoing struggle regarding Google’s dominance over the search market. Blocking this partnership is part of this struggle.

Google hasn’t commented on this move just yet. However, we can tell that it doesn’t like it, and will defend its ability to invest in Anthropic. Also, we’re sure that Anthropic in the same boat.

What about the other company?

Google has another reason to be upset with the DOJ. It’s not the only large company investing in Anthropic. As stated before, Amazon has also invested in the company, but the DOJ isn’t targeting that company. We know that Google has a ton of heat on it because of the recent lawsuits, but Amazon has also had its run-ins with antitrust lawsuits.

There’s no telling if the DOJ will also look into Amazon’s connection with Anthropic. In any case, if Google has to disconnect from Anthropic, then it will lose probably one of its biggest investors.
