Humanity fights for its very existence in the first trailer for director Gareth Edwards post-apocalyptic thriller, The Creator. Released courtesy of 20th Century Studios, the first footage from The Creator gives us a tease of the epic battle to come, as Tenet star John David Washington battles for the future of us all against a rebellious, advanced artificial intelligence. You can check out the exciting new trailer for The Creator below.
Described as “a post-apocalyptic thriller involving a future impacted by a war between humans and AI,” the trailer at last pulls back the curtain on (at least some) of the mysteries behind The Creator. Revealing a post-apocalyptic world that falls somewhere between Blade Runner, The Terminator, and District 9, The Creator begins when the AI that was designed to protect us instead decides to destroy us. Sound familiar? But where things change is when Washington’s soldier discovers the so-called ‘secret weapon’ that the machines have in their possession…a robot child.
Torn between saving humanity and not betraying his own, The Creator finds Washington caught in the middle of a war that he does not know how to win. Alongside the trailer, a quintessentially sci-fi-looking poster for The Creator has also been unveiled, which you can check out below…
Written and directed by Gareth Edwards, who is best known for the likes of the intimate monster movie Monsters in 2010, the much-less intimate Godzilla in 2014, and the Star Wars prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016, The Creator looks like it could bring something fresh to the post-apocalyptic genre.
And Edwards has certainly amassed a stellar cast to do just that. Leading the way is John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm & Marie), who will be joined by Gemma Chan (Eternals, Crazy Rich Asians), Academy Award winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya, The Help), Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Green Knight), Ken Watanabe (Inception, The Last Samurai), Sturgill Simpson (The Hunt), and Marc Menchaca (Ozark, Sick).
The Creator Has Been Compared to Blade Runner & District 9
While this may the first that wider audiences have seen anything from The Creator, footage from the science fiction outing was shown during CinemaCon earlier this year. And it received some favorable comparisons to several sci-fi classics. “[The Creator makes] Blade Runner look like child’s play,” said one reaction, with another adding “It’s a big sci-fi movie with lots of humanity…reminded me of District 9 in that way.”
Aside from The Creator, this year holds plenty in store for science fiction fans. The world of Marvel will delve into sci-fi with the Disney+ series Secret Invasion and the big screen venture The Marvels. A Transformers sequel, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is also set for release in 2023, as is the science fiction epic Dune: Part Two. Netflix meanwhile will bring viewers the serial adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, the comedy They Cloned Tyrone, and the first part of director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon.
The Creator is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 29, 2023, by 20th Century Studios.
