The fight for our existence begins in the final trailer for director Gareth Edwards’ The Creator. Released courtesy of 20th Century Studios, The Creator will plunge audiences into a future ravaged by war between humanity and forces of artificial intelligence, following John David Washington’s ex-special forces agent who is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator. But what he finds could change the course of human history. Check out the final trailer for The Creator below.

“Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself,” the official synopsis for The Creator reads. “Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla), who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz, The Creator stars John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman), Gemma Chan (Eternals, CRazy Rich Asians), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Batman Begins), Sturgill Simpson (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Hunt), and Allison Janney (The Help, I, Tonya), with newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles starring as the mysterious child who could hold the key to the human/AI war.

Earlier this year, The Creator Gareth Edwards explained to Screen Rant how the movie came to be, citing cinematic classics Apocalypse Now and Blade Runner as major inspirations for this vision of the future. It all started when the filmmaker found himself in Vietnam…

“I go over there, and we end up touring all of Vietnam and seeing everything. You can’t help but see all that imagery from the Vietnam War and think of films like Apocalypse Now and all that,” he began. “We were in these paddy fields in the absolute middle of nowhere, and I still had this science fiction thing in my head. I just kept watching everybody and turning them into a robot and going, “Oh my God, this is really cool.” There’d be like Buddhist monks in temples, and you’d just picture them as robots. I’d go, “What is going on here?” The fastest way to explain it to anyone [is that it] was as if someone made Apocalypse Now in the Blade Runner universe. I felt like that’s a DVD missing on my shelf.”

The Creator will have its premiere at this month’s Fantastic Fest (which takes place 21 Sept – 28 Sept) and is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 29, by 20th Century Studios.
